Shows to Watch During Quarantine: Pt.1

Since we all have been ordered to stay in our homes, why not make the best of your time? There is but so much we can do during this quarantine anyway. I mean, it isn’t the most productive way to spend our time, but who cares… let the good times roll. There will be moments that you don’t feel like being productive and just want to watch some wholesome television that doesn’t include virus updates.

Maybe you’ve been meaning to catch up on a show or looking to get into a new one, this is where I come into play. I’ve been watching a host of shows, some new and some old. Nevertheless, I’ve been watching! So for the next upcoming weeks, I will be highlighting some of my favorites and I’ll even try to do a list of movies as well.

Oh and don’t worry,  I won’t spoil it too much for you.

Here is part 1 of some of the shows that I’m currently watching or have enjoyed binging. Let me know if you have any other suggestions, I would love to check them out as well.

Reality Television
  • Love Is Blind (Netflix). Who would’ve thought that in order to find our true love all we had to do was be held in a pod? But seriously, who hasn’t seen the memes or Lauren and Cameron all on your timeline? ‘Love Is Blind’ was featured everywhere, so it was inevitable that I would join the bandwagon and get hooked. Contestants come on the show to find their ideal match, all while never seeing what the person looks like. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? With just one season under their belt, this show has viewers like myself, anticipating season 2 and waiting for new love to unfold.
  • Flavor of Love (Hulu). You can’t tell me that this wasn’t the first glance of “Ratchet Tv” that we got to witness, this show is definitely the OG! Now as an adult this show hits completely differently and more funnier than it was back then. I still don’t understand why my parents allowed me to watch this but thanks, mom and dad. We are all familiar with Flavor Flav and his quest to find love on television and whoever decided to make this show in the first place is a genius. From the nickname choices to Flavor Flav’s personality, none of the episodes disappoint. I mean even though he doesn’t end up with any of these women in the future it’s still worth the watch.
  • The Hills (Hulu). *Cues ‘Unwritten’ by Natasha Bedingfield* Now thisssss show was my life growing up!  If you loved ‘Laguna Beach’ then I know you will love ‘The Hills’, probably less but love nevertheless. We follow LC (Lauren Conrad) on her journey post-Laguna as she takes her chances of climbing the ladder in the fashion industry. The fall outs and hook-ups are enough for you to become instantly obsessed with this show, trust me you will love it. We stan Lauren Conrad around these parts and she is a national treasure.
Docu-Series
  • Tiger King (Netflix). Who doesn’t love gun-toting, country singing rednecks, with mullets? Don’t all answer at once, please. Okay hear me out about this one, I know a lot of people have been skeptical about watching this show, but you should. The life of Joe Exotic is one to learn from and oddly entertaining from start to finish. The former private zoo owner shows why we should never bite off more than we can chew. With his larger than life personality, Joe showcases his life for the world to see which eventually leads to his demise. What other show can you see wild animals, murder, and a throuple? Yeah… that’s what I thought.
  • Cheer (Netflix). We could all use some “Mat Talk” from Jerry during this pressing time (You’ll understand the definition after watching the show…duh). This isn’t your typical cheer show by any means. ‘Cheer’ follows the lives of the young women and men that make up Navarro Cheer, some of which didn’t have the most ideal upbringing. This show makes you feel all sorts of emotions and be blown away by their stories. It’s hard not to fall in love with all of the characters and the athleticism they display. We watch their journey as they prepare and compete in the NCA National Cheerleading Competition in Daytona for another championship title. Will they take home the prize? Watch and find out.
Network Television
  • A Million Little Things (ABC & Hulu). They should rename this show “A Million Little Tears”, okay that was so cheesy, but seriously keep the tissues for the first few episodes. Before I get into the description, I wanted to highlight the representation that is displayed on black men’s mental health. This was something that is unexpected but so needed, especially on television. But back to the details, a group of friends is forced to stick together like never before. After the suicide of one friend, causes the group to reevaluate their lives and to actually start living. Though many secrets will be revealed in the process and make them question a lot, they know that they can always count on each other. Each character is fighting their own battles and makes viewers view life, love, and friendships in a whole new light.
  • Good Girls (NBC, Hulu & Netflix). Good girls gone bad is the best way to describe this incredibly written masterpiece of a show *chef kisses*.  If this show doesn’t leave you speechless after every episode, I don’t know what more I have to offer you. Centered around a group of suburban moms that plan to rob a store to make ends meet ultimately takes a turn for the worst. This one event puts them is a situation that changes their lives in ways they couldn’t imagine. * Added bonus, this shows features a fine drug dealer with a voice that will make you see past his conniving ways or just avoid them.
My Go-To Show
  • Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Hulu). So even before the quarantine, I was obsessed with Ms. Buffy Ann Summers and her slay adventures . This show makes being a teen in the 90’s look exhausting. As the “chosen one”, Buffy must balance school, love, and protecting Sunnydale from all sorts of evil. This isn’t the ideal life for a teenage girl but Buffy tries her best to maintain some sense of “normal”. Her witty and sarcastic gestures are what gives the show an extra edge and not to mentions her friends. But the best parts always involve her love life, oh how I would love to be Buffy Summers for a day.
Shows That Proved Me Wrong
  • Ozark (Netflix). Okayyyy, I owe all of my twitter followers a huge apology. I think I talked the most crap about this show because the first couple of episodes were a drag to me. I literally had to force myself to watch it, but I made a promise to my friends that I would give it a fair shot. Season 2 is what got me going, you really have to suffer to get to the bliss and it doesn’t disappoint. Honestly, I still couldn’t really tell you what it’s about, but I’ll try. After a money laundering scheme lands one man in deep trouble, he is forced to pack up all his things and relocate his family to the Ozarks (aha..see where the names comes from). The Byrdes must find ways to launder money for the second largest drug cartel in Mexico all while saving face as an ordinary family.

Shows I Want to Start Watching

  • ‘For Life’ (ABC, Hulu)
  • ‘Elite’ (Netflix)
  • ‘Money Heist’ (Netflix)
